A 'Rustic Bridal Succulent' shoot in Wiltshire

17 Oct 2018

Celebrating bridal individuality, this wedding shoot was brought to life among the golden barley fields and striking interior of Wiltshire wedding venue, Casterley Barn

Hair and make-up artist Marie Kelly takes us behind the scenes on this Wiltshire wedding shoot, which presents two non-conventional brides born to be different.

The location

Our Rustic Bridal Succulent shoot took place in the beautiful rolling countryside of the Pewsey Vale in Wiltshire, at the contemporary Casterley Barn nestled into the Vale Valley - a new environmentally-conscious wedding and events venue.

The inspiration and styling

This shoot was simplistic in its styling, taking elements from nature to add shape and interest to the modern yet rustic venue. We incorporated bark and silvery foliage to keep with the contemporary vibe, along with some gold/copper tones running through as a nod to the golden barley fields that surround the barn. Small succulents, dark branches and berry tones added a colour 'pop' to create some drama against the natural background.

The flowers

Berry tones are my favourite and so transferable from season to season, so we incorporated these as coloured accents into the bridal bouquets. The bouquets were in two styles as our model brides represented two different personalities and styles. A hand-tied upright style using clematis, roses, pampas grass and eucalyptus represented a more relaxed rustic vibe. The other bouquet was a loose pageant style using hydrangeas, blush roses and red anthurium to represent a more soft feminine style to complement the dramatic Rachel Allan bridal gown.

We also incorporated the colours and flowers into the picture frame ceremonial arch. This was arranged using pampas grass, anthurium, roses and clematis with lots of mixed foliage including three types of eucalyptus, willow, ivy and cotinus in shades of deep red, plum and burgundy.

The table setting was created using curly willow branches and succulents planted into geometric vases. Terrariums with gold and bronze frames kept that subtle gold accent quietly running through the shoot, tying it all together. Deep plum grape/some berries were used as a contrast in-keeping with the rich quality that the berry and plum tones provide.

The hair and make-up

Hair and make-up was kept rustic. We gave Katie textured waved hair as she had the most gorgeous golden long locks, so created a half-up fishtail plait which is so simple. Katie wore a Rachel Allan dress from the Lo Adoro range which was such a statement, so I didn't want her hair to look too overworked. For her make-up we used fresh young colours, employing pinks and peaches on the eyes to steer clear from a typical bridal look and maintain youth. This was paired with a juicy soft pink on the lips which we then switched up later to a deep black cherry lip for a more dramatic evening look.

Jemimah's look was more 'bohemian elegance', a beautiful but simple rolled up-do but again bringing it into 2018 with the braid following the crown of her head. The hairstyle and make-up really married together with the two dresses we chose for her: a gorgeous floaty Mary's gown with a nude/taupe underlay and a Rachel Allan dress with a floral appliqué design. An antique bronze and chocolate smokey eye brought out her blue eye colour, while highlighting her gorgeous freckles and glowing skin.

The looks showcased two very different bridal styles, but suggested that you don't have to follow tradition and can be individual on your wedding day.
