A pink garden party wedding in Norfolk: Sophie Bell and James Bacon

18 May 2016

A positively pink theme perfectly complemented this garden party wedding in Norfolk, which saw the sun shine at the most appropriate moment

Tell us about the proposal.

It happened whilst on holiday in Barcelona, in Park Güell a year to the day before we got married (we already secretly had a date in mind). Unfortunately our camera with all the photos on was stolen, so it happened again a week later so we could take some new ones!

How did you decide on 'the dress'?

I tried on loads of dresses, I had a couple of shopping trips with my mum. In the end I chose exactly what I’d always imagined.

Why did you choose your venue?

We wanted to get married in St Mary’s church as Sophie’s parents were married there, it meant a lot to us. Then we searched for gorgeous venues nearby and Oxnead Hall had it all: stunning gardens, a beautiful barn and the river.

Did you have a theme or particular colour scheme?

We decided quite early on that we wanted a traditional summer garden party for our wedding, luckily the weather was perfect. We served afternoon tea for our wedding breakfast followed by lawn games and rowing on the river. And it was always going to be pink themed!

What did the bridesmaids wear?

Shocking pink Dessy dresses, perfect for a summer’s day.

And the groom/groomsmen?

Traditional tails.

What flowers did you choose?

Mainly roses for the bouquets, then some wilder flowers for decorations in the church and barn.

And your cake?

We wanted to keep it simple and elegant looking. But each tier was a different flavour, something for everyone.

How did you feel on the morning?

It poured with rain all morning, which meant we were distracted by weather worries whilst getting ready. Luckily the sun came out just in time and the rest of the day had beautiful weather, we feel incredibly luckily to have had such perfect weather in the end.

Tell us about the structure of the day.

After the ceremony we snuck off to Sophie’s Grandpa’s garden for some quick photos together, this meant that when we arrived at Oxnead Hall our guests were all waiting to celebrate with us. Our drinks reception was in the stunning gardens, along with popcorn canapes and family photos.

We served afternoon tea in the barn and then returned to the garden for traditional lawn games, rowing on the river and to watch the sunset.

In the evening we returned to the barn for lots of dancing and a hog roast.

Where was your honeymoon?

An African adventure. We waited a week after the wedding before we went, but then got to spend three weeks travelling Zimbabwe (seeing the Victoria Falls), Botswana (on safari), South Africa and exploring all of Madagascar.

Any top tips for other brides?

Definitely get a videographer, we love our wedding video so much and it meant we could share some really special memories with those who couldn’t join us on the day.

We created our own photo booth, and love the results. Lots of extra photos that wouldn’t have been taken without it.
