A Mini Adventure: Damian & Hayley Wootton (née Marsh)

A love of classic cars inspired the theme for the Woottons’ special day

Damian and I first saw each other at a friend’s wedding but we didn’t speak to each other then. However, six months later, the friends whose wedding we’d attended swapped our phone numbers and we went out on a date. Our first date was amazing – as soon as we saw each other we hugged and it felt like we had known each other for ages.

We started seeing each other and both knew that it felt right. Three years later we went to Barcelona for Valentine’s Day, going out for a beautiful meal at a restaurant just off Las Ramblas, and that’s when Damian proposed to me – of course I said yes!

As soon as we started talking about getting married, my mum and I began thinking about the venue. We visited a few places near to home and none of them seemed quite right. Damian and I had both attended weddings at Crewe Hall before, and as we were walking around, we knew that it was the right place – it is such an amazing building, so interesting and unique. It was an easy decision to make and we booked our wedding day, 7 August 2010, two and a half years in advance!

We had plenty of time to get things sorted but I really wanted to get my dress ordered. Mum and I went to quite a few dress shops and I tried on about 20 altogether, none of which I was really taken with. Then we went to Pronuptia in Chester, where the staff were lovely, and I picked out a few dresses that I liked, but they were not quite right. When I tried on the one I eventually chose, I came out of the dressing room and looked in the mirror and was totally speechless, my mum had tears in her eyes and I just knew it was my dress.

My favourite colour is pink and I am a real girly girl, so choosing the colour theme was easy: pink and sparkly! The bridesmaids were in pink dresses, we had pink table decorations and pink flowers, and the chocolates favours were pink and silver. Our other theme was Mini cars, because Damian has always been into them. He really wanted to have a Mini parade from our house to Crewe Hall, and for all the Mini cars to do the ‘Mini swerve’ up the long drive and park in front of the building – and that’s what they did! We carried the theme through to the reception, naming each of the tables after a different type of Mini.

The day itself came round so quickly! As soon as I woke up that morning I was so excited – I couldn’t believe that our day had finally arrived. After breakfast it was hectic, with us all trying to get ready. The time went so quickly and before we knew it the guests were arriving.

We were due to get married at 4pm and I was 18 minutes late! Thankfully, we didn’t have far to walk to get to the ceremony. I didn’t feel nervous at all but my dad was shaking like a leaf. Damian was looking very nervous and was standing waiting in the room, which was very hot for quite a while. The ceremony was great, just how we wanted it – not too long and with two short readings by my brother and Nicole, one of my bridesmaids.

After the ceremony, our photographer, Frank Henshall, took Damian and I outside while our guests had drinks and canapés on the terrace.

After the photos we formed a receiving line to welcome all the guests to join us for our wedding breakfast. Once everyone was seated, Philip, our toastmaster, introduced each person to do their speech. My dad went first; his speech was just amazing, making everyone laugh with funny stories about me when I was little, and welcomed Damian into our family. Then it was Damian’s turn. As part of his speech he told everybody that he had been given the task of organizing our honeymoon. I had no idea where we were going and he produced a handmade card that I had to read out: “We are going to spend two weeks as Mr and Mrs on an island in the Maldives.” Wow! Then John, the best man, delivered his speech, which was also funny and touching.

The wedding breakfast turned into the evening do as more guests started to arrive and the DJ got going. We cut the cake and were announced onto the dance floor for our first dance. Later in the evening, Josie, one of my bridesmaids, entertained us by singing songs especially for us, finishing with Damian’s favourite song as a surprise from his wife! She was fantastic.

During the whole day we were being filmed by Dennis, the DVD guy, who was brilliant; we weren’t really aware of him being there but he captured everything for us. We have watched the DVD so many times and each time it makes me cry and we notice different things that we had not spotted before – a great way to relive our special day!
