A magical Harry Potter themed wedding in Essex

14 Jun 2022

After postponing their wedding due to the pandemic, Kirsty Richardson and Jason Wright finally tied the knot with an elegant, Harry Potter style wedding in Essex

How did you meet?

We met at Horror-on-Sea Film Festival. Jason’s company, Silent Studios, was providing some promotional zombies to scare the clientele. Earlier in the week, his business partner (a friend of mine) asked me if I would help and zombie up for him. So, Jason first met me while I was in full zombie make-up.

Tell us about the proposal.

Jason proposed to me on a boat trip in Cyprus. They were doing the announcements and Jason wandered off for drinks. Next thing I know, Jason called me to the front of the boat and proposed. It was very romantic.

How was your wedding affected by Covid-19?

We sadly had to postpone from 2021 and due to loss of income in Jason’s business, we also had to massively reduce our guestlist.

What was the theme for the day, and did you have a colour scheme?

We had a Harry Potter theme (which is my favourite thing) in an elegant style, maintaining the wedding feel, my love of Harry Potter, and the colour scheme which was Cadbury’s purple.

What venue did you choose and why did you choose it?

We chose Orsett Hall. Out of all of the venues we saw, this one gave me goosebumps. We walked into the room at the exact moment the DJ at the open evening set off the dry ice. I looked at Jason and said “we’re getting married here”.

How did you know you’d found ‘the’ dress?

My dress was Ellen by Watters. It just felt right, I felt like a goddess in it. It was both heavy, yet light at the same time and I didn’t want to take it off. It was a far cry from what I thought I wanted and I think I tried on about ten dresses in total.

Who were the bridesmaids and what did they wear?

I had two maids of honour, Jo and Vicky, and two bridesmaids, Jade and Jessica. They all wore gorgeous purple dresses from Floryday.

What did the mother of the bride wear?

My mum had her dress designed and made for her by The Dressmaker in Leigh-on-Sea. She always struggles to find anything she likes and the entire process was a breeze. Kim was absolutely amazing from day one and completely understood exactly what mum was needing. She created it without taking one measurement, completely amazing the both of us.

I would thoroughly recommend The Dressmaker to anyone who struggling for a mother of the bride outfit.

Where did you find your suits?

Moss Bros.

Did you hire a wedding planner? How did they help?

We hired Clare Nixon from Charmed Events. Not only is she one of my closest friends, but she took over organising all the decorations for me (the non-Harry Potter ones) and sorted everything out on the day. She’s simply the best.

Often the aspect that makes a wedding original to the couple is the detail – tell us about the details of the day

Clare did all of our centrepieces and room décor. I did a lot of DIY details myself. I created magic wands for my bridesmaids and groomsmen for photos, I created a unique sorting hat table plan and wrote all the place cards in Harry Potter font by hand. Jason did a lot of design work such as creating Harry Potter style posters and finding Harry Potter décor items to complement the table names. It all came together beautifully.

How did you feel as you walked down the aisle?

I was beyond excited, my dad had to slow me down.

How did you make the ceremony personal to you?

We walked down the aisle to Hedwig’s Theme from Harry Potter. We had an owl fly the rings down to Jason, which was breath-taking, and my mum read a funny poem that perfectly sums up Jason and I.

What was your most memorable moment?

There are so many memorable moments of the day so it's hard to choose. I think our favourite moment is turning at the altar to see the owl swooping down the aisle carrying our rings while the pianist was playing Hedwig’s Theme. It was simply magical and gave me goosebumps.

What was the most challenging aspect of planning this wedding?

I think for us the most challenging aspect was having to postpone everything, and then re-plan everything due to Covid. You kind of get stuck in a rut and lose your enthusiasm for planning. It wasn’t really until January that I finally felt excited about planning again. The other challenge for us was the Harry Potter theming while keeping the wedding elegant. Getting all of the little bits and pieces on a budget was also a challenge.

What was the most important investment for you?

The most important investment for us was the wedding rings. We picked them together and it is something we will have forever so we wanted to make sure they signified our love for each other. Photography and videography were next on our list, again, for the memories they provide for the rest of our lives.

What song did you choose for your first dance, and why?

Bound to You by Christina Aguilera, simply because we both love it.

Did you have any evening entertainment?

Just a DJ.

Tell us about your wedding cake.

Our wedding cake was Harry Potter themed, with chocolate for the bottom layer, then coffee, walnut, and Victoria sponge. The top layer was fake for our cake topper.

If you could go back and change anything, what would it be?

Weddings always have their good and bad parts but, in this case, I wouldn’t change anything as we had a wonderful day.

Did anything go wrong on the day?

Jason left his engagement ring on and we couldn’t get it off when we were exchanging rings, which was quite funny. Also, our DJ completely messed up our first dance. He played it far too fast so it sounded a bit like Alvin and the Chipmunks trying to sing our song.

Where did you go on honeymoon?

We went to St Lucia a week after the wedding.

Do you have any advice for couples in the planning stages?

Don’t stress the little details, it goes so fast.
