A lemon yellow church wedding in Cambridgeshire: Emma Tomkins and Nathan Brownsell

20 Jun 2016

Filled with the joys of spring, this church wedding in Stilton, Peterborough, showcases how your own creative input can keep the costs down

Why did you choose your venue?

We knew right from that start that we would hold our wedding in Stilton; the place where Nathan and I both grew up, the place where our parents live and the village we love. Stilton Church has so much meaning to us, we were both christened within it and have said goodbye to loved ones there too, and this is why we made the decision to marry there.

For us, we wanted a wedding that had meaning, love and memories in every corner, which made our reception venue an equally easy choice. We hired a marquee which was in my parent’s garden and again, held much meaning. We didn’t have to worry about the cost of paying per head and we just know it would be perfect for what we wanted.

What was your colour scheme?

Whilst planning I originally wanted lemon for our colour scheme because I always knew I would have lemon roses as my flowers, in memory of my Nan. However, I then decided I wanted a range of colours and dresses to reflect each of my bridesmaids' individual tastes and personalities. We therefore decided that other pastel colours would work with the lemon. Also, with getting married in spring they just seemed to fit with the season and the rustic theme that just seemed to naturally feed through all our ideas.

Tell us about your dress.

Surprisingly, my chosen wedding dress was totally different to what I thought I would go for - it was big and sparkly, rather than the fitted fishtail I had originally pictured. Nathan, on the other hand, had the suit he had always said he wanted for himself and the groomsmen. Their pocket squares and ties were lilac to coordinate in with our colour scheme.

Did you have any help from friends/family members?

The help we received from our parents, family and friends was overwhelming. They were all there from start to finish and we felt incredibly touched. Their support and contributions inevitably helped give our wedding day the personal and intimate atmosphere that it oozed. My now brother-in-law arranged our wedding cars through the company for which he works and my grandma arranged our flowers. My aunties made the bunting, cake and helped dress the marquee as did our parents, other family members, bridesmaids and groomsmen.

A small band, who live within our local community, provided their fantastic services for our evening entertainment and the village working man’s club supplied their superb bar facilities. We were also blessed to find our amazing photographer locally, Lorna Newman, who worked tirelessly all day to ensure we had endless, flawless shots of our wedding day.

We loved that our wedding helped support our village church and small, local businesses. Our wedding wasn’t in a stately home or in a particularly sought after location, however that was never what we wanted from our day. What we wanted was for everyone to be there with us, celebrating and having a wonderful time. Our wedding was our idea of a fairytale, everything we wanted and more... and all within budget.

Looking back, what do you wish you'd known before?

To worry less, it was always going to be perfect to us.

Did anything go wrong on the day?

Our daughter swallowed her wobbly tooth whilst my friend and stepdad were singing acoustic. She totally stole their limelight, but had every single guest laughing.
