The wedding industry is ever-evolving and many make-up brands are striving to be cruelty- and vegan-free. Keep these ideas in mind when you’re deciding on your vegan friendly bridal look.

Be mindful with what you are putting on your face

When you’re using make-up and skincare products on your skin, you might not realise how animals are used in the production process.

“Make-up and other beauty products have been known to include urine, ground hooves, insects, sheep’s wool, and so much more,” says make-up artist Emma Burgess of Brunetti Artistry. “If you wouldn’t eat these ingredients, why would you want to put them on your skin?”

Some brands actually hide animal ingredients in their beauty products. Sunscreens and face lotions can include gelatine, which is made from cow or pig bones. Make sure you read the ingredient list of your skincare products. If you’re unsure what the ingredients are, there is a plethora of websites that demystify product ingredients and also tell you which brands are vegan and cruelty-free.

Some animal-based products can clog pores and irritate the skin, which isn’t exactly what a bride wants on her big day. When choosing your wedding make-up look, consider your options with your make-up artist. They may be able to recommend vegan alternatives that will make you look and feel just as good as brands that use animal products.

You could also look for eco-friendly brands yourself and incorporate them into your beauty routine long before your wedding preparation.

Consider using vegan alternatives

“Made from all natural ingredients, vegan products are amazing for your skin, especially if you are after a natural bridal glow for your big day,” says Emma. “They work wonders if you have acne, eczema, rosacea, or skin that’s too dry or oily.”

When you’re selecting a make-up artist for your wedding day, ask them if they use green beauty products; these are designed from completely natural ingredients.

“If you want to give your skin a break, use vegan products with natural plant-based ingredients. They are the richest sources of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other essential nutrients, which can help you achieve a smooth, glowing complexion.”

So, not only are these types of products good for your skin, but they are good for the environment too.

Consider the environmental impact

Speaking of the environment, make sure to consider the packaging in your search for sustainable skincare. Be mindful of products that come with an abundance of non-recyclable packaging, which is wasteful and damaging to the environment.

Brands such as Glossier offer an option to have your products delivered with minimal packaging, and others such as Jones Road Beauty - created by make-up artist Bobbi Brown - include mostly recyclable packaging.
