A Day to Remember: Wayne & Rebecca Davies (née Bloor)
With lots of support from family and friends, Rebecca and Wayne Davies created their perfect wedding
Wayne and I met at work in February 2008, thanks to our boss Steve. We enjoyed a staff night out in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, and after a few dates we knew that we were perfect for each other. A short time later, Wayne moved to the same team as me at work and although I had always enjoyed work, from this point onwards going to work never seemed to be a chore.
Shortly after meeting we were introduced to each other’s families. After a few lessons from my mum, Wayne soon became ‘Chief Sunday Dinner Chef’, and nearly every Sunday from then on he could be found preparing dinner for my family.
In December 2008, Wayne’s mum and stepdad emigrated to Australia. After a year of saving, in November 2009 Wayne and I went over to visit for four weeks – it was the holiday of a lifetime. After spending so much time together, on returning home we were lost without each other. At that time, Wayne was renting a house in Telford and I lived at home in Whitchurch with my parents, sister and brother.
Wayne has grown up in cities and towns, and initially found the country way of life a culture shock. He soon became used to it and I joked that he was becoming a ’country bumpkin’. Wayne would always deny that he was but could often be found helping my brother with his sheep and collecting hay bales. I’d say he is well on his way to becoming a country man!
In January 2010 I started a new job in Cheshire. After working closely with each other every day for a number of years, we found working apart hard to adjust to and longed to finish work so that we could see each other.
Once completing my initial training period in my new role, we went on a relaxing holiday to Egypt. Little did I know that a few weeks prior to this, whilst I was at work, Wayne visited my parents to ask them for my hand in marriage. During a nerve-wracking 45 minutes and many questions later, Wayne left with the answer he hoped for. He then liaised with my good friend Claire about which engagement ring he should get. All this was going on and text messages were exchanged whilst I was sitting next to Claire with absolutely no idea.
On our first evening in Egypt, Wayne suggested we go out for a special meal the following night. As I had no idea what he had planned, I thought it would be best to go later in the week. Little did I know that Wayne had already arranged a lovely meal at a top restaurant in a neighbouring hotel. Due to me being awkward, I now know that the following morning – while I was in the gym – Wayne was running around rearranging the plans he had already made with the hotels. Wayne then had to wait a further three days, desperate to ask me so that he could then relax and enjoy the holiday.
On the evening of Tuesday 13 July 2010 we both got dressed up – I still had no idea what was to come. In the hotel room before going out, Wayne asked me to close my eyes as he had a surprise. As a self-confessed chocoholic, I assumed Wayne had a chocolate treat for me. On opening my eyes I found Wayne on one knee in front of me. He popped the question and rather than the reply he expected, the first thing I said was, “Have you asked my dad?” He had, of course, and so I immediately said “yes!” We then had a lovely meal at an amazing Italian restaurant. Wayne had gone to so much trouble in arranging the perfect table in the restaurant, with Champagne and flowers.
We immediately phoned our parents and told them our good news; everyone was so happy for us. A couple of weeks later my parents hosted an engagement party for us at home, where we celebrated with our family and friends.
Within a few months of our engagement, we bought a house together in Whitchurch. Wayne moved in immediately and I remained at home with my parents, as I wanted to do the traditional thing and leave from home on the wedding day and move into the house after the wedding day.
We had by this time set a date for the wedding. We had a year to plan and, with great thanks to my parents for all their help and support, it was relatively stress-free. We also visited Wayne’s granddad in Bath, who very kindly offered to make our wedding rings as a present. We would like to thank Terry for the beautiful rings.
On Saturday 3 September 2011, the wedding day arrived. We had a lovely ceremony at St Alkmunds Church in Whitchurch, followed by the reception at Wrenbury Hall, Cheshire. The staff team was brilliant and helped to make the day perfect. It was the most amazing day of our lives so far and we would like to thank all our family and friends for sharing our special day with us.
The following day we enjoyed a lovely meal with our wedding party before leaving for our honeymoon. We enjoyed a fabulous week in Las Vegas and we are now enjoying married life in our home together.
