A '60s inspired wedding shoot with a 21st century twist

18 Jul 2018

Modernising an otherwise retro look, photographer Richard Goodrum-Ward takes us behind the scenes of this quirky wedding shoot in Dorset

Demonstrating how a vintage wedding theme need not look old-fashioned, a host of Dorset-based wedding suppliers came together to create this fun, fresh and fabulous shoot inspired by the '60s. A contemporary makeover brought the theme to life, with Richard Goodrum-Ward of RGW Photos capturing the concept to perfection. Here, Richard offers insight into how they fufilled the brief...

What was the inspiration behind the shoot?

For this styled shoot, I wanted to try something completely different - a '60s inspired shoot and a 21st century twist. Having married my husband in 2011, I love nothing more than when a same-sex wedding enquiry pops into my inbox. I had to use a same-sex couple for this shoot; it took place in June which is also International Pride Month. I wanted to draw inspiration from the '60s with the prints, styles and colours, but give it a more modern feel. We used yellow as the main colour, with touches of white, grey and mint green.

Tell us a little bit about the venue and why it was chosen.

I always think very carefully about matching the venue to the theme of the shoot, so I wanted somewhere that had the look of a local village hall, just stepped up a bit. We were so lucky to be able to use The Pavilion at The Kings Arms, Christchurch - it was my number one choice and Chamane was just awesome in helping to arrange it for us. It definitely has that 60’s feel to it and being situated right by the old Christchurch Castle ruins was incredible.

What flowers did you use for the shoot?

We decided to break with tradition and not have flower arrangements. I wanted it to look and feel like a wedding from the '60s, where people may not have had the budgets we’re accustomed to today. We used simple large white daisies, yellow and green chrysanthemums which adorned the table. They were simply arranged in vintage Coca Cola bottles and other glassware we used to decorate and fill the table with.

What kind of look did you want to achieve with the hair and outfits for the grooms and the groomsmaid?

Again, breaking with tradition was a recurrent theme for us so we had two grooms - Artur and Emanuel - a real life couple and good friends of mine, along with their groomsmaid, Bridie.

We choose a casual chic look for all the models; the grooms wearing chinos and brightly coloured socks from Edgar and Scott and other accessories (braces, bow ties and brooches) by Kimberley Stone Design. Bridie wore two '60s inspired dresses which were both found in local charity shops, showing that you don’t have to spend a fortune to look fabulous. Her headpieces were from the incredibly talented Becca from To Be Adorned. Hair and make-up for Bridie was by the ever-so-talented (and lovely) Raechelle from Enchanted Beauty Bournemouth, and the slightly avant-garde looks for the guys were created by Charlotte from Charlotte Curtis Make-up.

What was the thinking behind the décor for the shoot? How did you tie it all together?

We wanted some more traditional/in-keeping 60’s touches to the day, but also some bolder, brighter elements too. We had additional props from Swingletree Vintage, such as the typewriter, glassware and crockery; a stunning ivory flower wall from The Dorset Flower Wall Company; and some of the most amazing bright yellow mix and match chairs from Purple Door Props. All of which were dressed to perfection by the fabulous Rachel from Love By Design Weddings and Events.

What kind of accessories were used to create these looks and why?

Combining both modern and vintage is more tricky than it seems, you can’t just fling all the elements together and hope for the best. It took a little more finessing and balance to create the whole look. Using a fair amount of vintage glassware and crockery to dress the table, with the more modern twist elements coming from the stationery, clothing, and the grooms' avant-garde make-up. I always like to showcase local talents, which is exactly why I chose to use both Kimberley Stone Design and To Be Adorned for both the grooms and groomsmaid’s accessories, as both designers hand-make everything which really helped finished their looks just perfectly.
