5 tips for booking your perfect honeymoon in 2014

09 Jan 2014

If you are one of the lucky, loved-up couples who got engaged over the festive season, then firstly – congratulations! And secondly, along with all the other exciting things you have to plan, you may want to think about booking your honeymoon in order to get the best deals and package to suite you. Ideally it’s best to book your honeymoon around 9 months before you’re thinking of going - this will ensure that all aspects of your dream honeymoon are available, it will give you a chance to get those all-important early bird discounts and honeymoon benefits, and will also allow you to take advantage of honeymoon gift lists in time for sending out your wedding invites.

Below are some insider’s tips to helping you plan the honeymoon that is perfect for you.

1. Couples are unique, and so are honeymoons

When you think ‘honeymoon’, your mind may drift to the world-famous islands of the Maldives, complete with clear waters, incredible diving and luxurious water villas. Of course, this is an incredible destination which is perfect for couples looking to completely relax after the stresses of the wedding – this destination is a paradise for those wanting to unwind on the beach and sip cocktails! But, if you want a bit of culture or a bit more excitement, then be warned as you may not find this here. Yes, this is a perfect honeymoon destination, but not for everyone. So when you’re booking your honeymoon, remember to think outside the box and to think about what is perfect for you as a couple – if you want culture, think about going to Thailand, for peace and quiet, head to the Maldives, for opulent accommodation, head to the far east and for a incredible wildlife encounter, think about booking a safari.

2 Make a list

Looking for your dream honeymoon can be a little overwhelming, so it’s a good idea to come up with a realistic list of the things that you think will make your honeymoon special. For example, if you want to wake up by the beach every day, be within close proximity to markets, stay in a villa with a plunge pool, or want to go elephant trekking - make a note of it. Make sure the list a realistic to your budget and be prepared to be a bit flexible with your criteria before taking it to your travel consultant, but other than that, the more information the better!

3 Save time and book with a travel consultant

Wedding planning can feel like it takes over your life sometimes, so it’s a good idea to take some of the stress away at any opportunity. Travel consultants can save you hours of time trawling through the web, looking for your honeymoon. They’re the experts, so use the knowledge and contacts they have to help you book your honeymoon with the best itinerary at the best price.

4 Stick to the budget

As you know, it’s important to stick to a budget when you’re wedding planning , and it’s no exception with your honeymoon. Firstly, make sure that you include a budget for your honeymoon, and secondly try and stick to it to avoid paying for it for months into your marriage!

5. Set up a honeymoon gift list

A honeymoon gift list can be a god-send for couples wanting to go on a their perfect honeymoon but who’s budget can’t quite stretch to it. Who wouldn’t want to start their marriage with an incredible honeymoon over receiving a mountain of crockery or toasters?!
