With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, there can be a lot of pressure to commemorate the day in a special way. Glean some inspiration with these four unique date ideas.

Visit a local destination you’ve been meaning to see

Instead of visiting your favourite little village town or frequenting the same restaurant, find somewhere new to go that you and your partner have always been meaning to see.

There are many picturesque and fun places to visit in your local area for a short and sweet day trip or weekend away. Pack a lunch or make an itinerary of the day or days to make sure you can visit everywhere you’d like to go. Alternatively, take each day as it comes if you’re after a relaxing Valentine’s retreat with your beloved.

“The UK is full of hidden gems, from historic castles to beautiful scenery that will make your Valentine’s extra special,” says Claire Beatson, general manager of independent and ethical jewellery brand Nightingale.

If you have a furry companion, take them along with you. There is an abundance of pet-friendly places to visit across the UK, from the serene coasts of Cornwall to the hustle and bustle of London.

The picturesque market town of Cirencester in Gloucestershire is the most stress-free UK staycation area, according to camper advice website PaulCamper. Bourton-on-the-Water, Tunbridge Wells and Kent are also relaxing options for short visits.

Have a movie marathon

Instead of dressing up for dinner and a show, why not make a date of it at home with a cosy Pinterest-worthy fort?

Transform your living room space by using bed sheets, cushions and fairy lights to build a cosy blanket fort. Treat you and your partner to some of your favourite snacks and drinks. This makes for a cheap and cheerful Valentine's Day date with your loved one.

The films you watch don’t even have to be rom-com related if one or neither of you are a fan of the genre. Comb though Netflix and find a movie that you think you would both enjoy, or rewatch an old favourite together.

If you're planning for an upcoming wedding, combine this with your Valentine's Day celebrations by watching popular wedding movies. The Princess Bride, Sense & Sensibility and The Wedding Singer are some of the nation's favourites according to Cheshire wedding venue The Mere Resort

Get creative

If you’re both feeling a bit creative, break open a bottle of wine and try your hand at painting. You could take a painting class together, or have a more intimate experience at home instead. There are plenty of virtual classes you can take part in online for a small fee or search YouTube for a free lesson. All you will need to get is the supplies; a couple of brushes, canvases and paint.

Claire explains: “According to research, 45 minutes of creative activity significantly lessens stress in the body, meaning that painting together can help you both to unwind. A good bottle of red will help to set an intimate and cosy atmosphere, too.”

For a Valentine’s Day to remember, try taking it in turns to paint one another. Even if neither of you is the next Picasso or Van Gogh, you still get to keep a sweet memento of the special day. You could even make this a regular occurrence and see if your painting improves each year.

Unwind with an at-home spa experience

If both you and your partner lead busy lifestyles, it might be a nice and unexpected idea to relax and unwind this Valentine’s Day. Take it in turns to pamper each other with your very own at-home spa experience.

Use scented candles, relaxing music and some mood lighting to set the scene and turn your bedroom or living room into a spa retreat.

Pamper yourselves with a relaxing facial or get your significant other to give you a manicure or pedicure. Pop some cucumber slices on each other's eyes for the full spa experience.
