From royal ceremonies to D-list nuptials, we all love to see a celebrity wedding. Here, we revisit 10 of the top most extravagant celebrity weddings.
Whether they splashed the cash or embraced the eccentricity of their characters, the top 10 most extravagant celebrity weddings will make you feel sound in both budget and mind.
1. Prince William and Kate Middleton
With an estimated overall cost of £20.6 million, most of which was spent on security, it is no wonder that this royal wedding spurned so much public interest. Broadcast live across the globe, every detail was captured for all to see – from the bride’s exquisite Alexander McQueen gown to the first public kiss on the balcony at Buckingham Palace.
2. Prince Charles and Lady Diana
Another royal wedding watched by the world was that of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981 at St Pauls Cathedral. Diana looked radiant in her £9,000 wedding dress which was designed by David Emanuel and boasted a 25ft train. The ceremony cost a whopping £32 million, which, again, was mostly incurred by security… the joys of being a royal.
3. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
Reality darling and selfie Queen, Kim K, pulled out all the stops for her marriage to Kanye West. Held in Florence, Italy, the day’s highlights included a 20ft wall of white flowers as a ceremonial backdrop and performances by Andrea Bocelli, John Legend and Lana Del Rey, not to mention a seven-tiered wedding cake. The bride wore couture Givenchy and was accompanied by the entire Kardashian clan who all walked down the aisle in white.
4. Wayne and Coleen Rooney
Wed in Italy, Wayne Rooney and his childhood sweetheart, Coleen, invited guests for a four-day celebration in Italy to mark their nuptials. The pre-wedding celebrations cost over £1 million alone, which included a party on a yacht worth £80 million. A performance from Westlife and a dress which cost a gut-wrenching £200,000, ensured this celebrity wedding would be talked about for years to come.
5. David Beckham and Victoria Adams
Victoria who?! Rewind to 1999, when that edition of OK! landed and the image of a Premiere League footballer and his Spice Girl bride sat atop golden thrones made the front cover. The Beckhams were born and their empire was just in its infancy. The ceremony took place at Luttrellstown Castle, near Dublin. Victoria wore a Vera Wang gown with 30ft train and 18-carat gold crown, before joining David in matching ‘his and hers’ purple outfits for the reception.
6. Katie Price and Peter Andre
Katie Price is never one to shy away and her ill-fated marriage to Peter Andre was flamboyantly OTT to say the least. Highclere Castle in Hampshire – the setting of Downton Abbey – was the chosen venue for the big day, which saw a Barbie pink colour theme, Swarovski encrusted meringue wedding gown and the couple’s own version of Aladdin’s 'A Whole New World' for the first dance. Next stop, Alex Reid....
7. Petra Ecclestone and James Stunt
Bernie Ecclestone’s daughter was never going to scrimp when it came to her special day and the Formula 1 heiress did not disappoint when she said “I do”. Generating an estimated wedding bill of £12 million, the couple married in a castle in a medieval town in Italy which was closed down for the day. A Vera Wang dress, acrobatic display and perfomances from The Black Eyed Peas and David Guetta made for an unforgettable affair, yet the marriage was not to last and the couple commenced divorde proceedings in 2017.
8. Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier
Recently cinematised in all its golden glory, the marriage of Grace Kelly to Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956 is the original showbiz fairytale. Over 20,000 people lined the streets to see the stunning bride arrive in her now-renowned Belgian lace gown, gifted by MGM Studios. The two-week event featured two ceremonies – one in the Throne Room and one in Saint Nicolas Cathedral – and an influential guest list, which included Conrad Hilton and Cary Grant.
9. Liza Minnelli and David Gest
A guest list that read like a who’s who of Hollywood made this wedding one of the most talked about unities in Tinseltown. Elizabeth Taylor was Minelli’s maid of honour and Michael Jackson stood as David Gest’s best man, while New York’s Marble Collegiate Church was filled with the likes of Mia Farrow, Donald Trump and Diana Ross. The wedding cost a reported £2.5million and featured a 12-tiered cake, 60-piece orchestra and one of the most awkward first kisses ever known to man.
10. Paul McCartney and Heather Mills
The 2002 wedding of Sir Paul McCartney and his now ex-wife, Heather Mills, took place at the 17th Century Castle Leslie in Country Monaghan. Indian themed, the £2 million wedding was an elaborate affair with a guest list that included Ringo Starr, Chrissy Hynde and Twiggy. Paul even honoured his bride with a song that he composed, called ‘Heather’.
